This week: Copy This and Copy That
I’ve been in TV sales and acquisitions for a while. One of the more time-consuming tasks is writing copy for a TV show when selling it. The very first piece of text is the first encounter with the show for a potential buyer, whether it is the text uploaded to a festival website when submitting the show, or the first short description in a presentation or a deck that is sent around without you being able to deliver a Don Draper type pitch in person.
At this stage, there aren't any original visual elements yet, which just puts even more pressure on the copy. There are often some text elements ready in the shape of an early-stage treatment, character descriptions, synopses, etc. These described text elements should be boiled down to one stellar piece of copy that highlights the unique selling points of a show and, as a bare minimum, should get the seller in front of the buyer. However fascinating AI is, it still feels like it'll take time before commissioners are ready to be pitched by robots.
Enough chatter - the experiment of this week is to see how we can work with ChatGPT as our copywriting aid. The below experiment was done using the GPT-3.5 model.
That’s a good start, but let’s see if we can tweak it a little bit:
Not bad, but let’s not forget about the commercial broadcasters out there:
And let’s not forget that TV-buyers are busy people, so let’s make it short and sweet:
What did I learn from the experiment?
Previously, I have found it difficult to rewrite copy multiple times as you easily lose track of the text after having spent a lot of time with it. Iterations can also become increasingly difficult the more of them you do. With ChatGPT as a copywriting assistant, it is faster and easier to constantly modify the copy, within the limits of the script and the overall creative vision, and position it to different broadcasters who all have different needs.
The next step in writing copy using AI would be to develop an even more thorough prompt with a deep knowledge of target audiences and broadcasters' needs and to feed it a more developed synopsis for a show than what I did here. Also, in a future newsletter, we'll get moving on some AI-generated key art as well.
Discovery of the week
Every week we share a new ai-related product that is buzzing. You know the feeling. Another day full of wonderful meetings is over and it’s time to dive into your notes and go through your action points, but your notebook is gone. Otter.ai will record, transcribe and write up key takeaway points from meetings or interviews you conduct as part of your research. And it will all be searchable. Boring? Maybe. Useful? Absolutely!
TV Show Idea Generator!
We all brainstorm with ourselves and with others. Now, we can also do it with machines! Each week we’ll share ideas for tv-shows that we have generated with our amazing GPT3-based Ai-dea Generator.
The words of the week this time around are quite topical. The setting is “Europe” and the special ingredient is “Heat Wave.” Stay hydrated out there. Here. We. Go:
Reach out if you want to produce one of the brilliant ideas above and please send us suggestions for word combinations that you want us to throw at the TV Show Ai-dea Generator Version 0.5.
